I don't think this applies for all training courses and certainly not for all managers. Sometimes, as a developer, you don't have the time nor the motivation to learn something new. I remember undergoing a 5 day UNIX training class (that was very pertinent to my job) a few years back and it did help me a lot.

I do admit though, that some training courses are scam, and most managers out there try to have as much training as they can for their staff in order to exhaust their yearly budget and inflate next year's budget.

You did forget something though, sometimes you get a training outside the country that you're in, and you actually get paid extra $$$/day just to show up! You may call it whatever you want, but this is, for me, a win-win situation for all.

Thanks for the comment Keith.
Its true that there are training courses that are useful - but they are mostly not about software development. Management stuff for sure. "Big picture" framework or process information, sure and sure. Its the "learn how to program in C++" or "SQL Server stored procedure programming" style courses that seem to suck the most.

Training courses are useful for "framework stuff" and "management stuff", where everybody needs to end up on the same page, or else. But yeah, courses in "techi stuff" are a waste of time and money. I find the combination of net tutorials, books, and (limited) access to an old hand (or two) is far more conducive to understanding techi stuff.
